47 In his talk, Ceb was highlighting the importance of learning also from winning, not only from defeat. Paolo Migliavacca (Inter Milan) said that in football “It’s important for the coaches to help the young players to learn from defeats and wins as part of the development process as football players”. Callum Williams (Tottenham Hotspur) reflected also on player development in football academies. “You can learn a lot from winning, especially at the development stage, when there’s still lot of things to improve, as it’s never a perfect win. It’s more difficult to learn from winning, because the players see the win as success and losing as failure. The key thing is not winning or losing, it’s developing the players.” Ricardo Baier (Universidad de Chile) also commented that learning from winning is more difficult than learning from losing, as with losing you tend to see the problems more clearly. Carlos Gomez (LA Galaxy) pointed out that sometimes the coaches need to help young players to learn from defeat, as they may miss the learning aspect due to disappointment and other emotional aspects after losing the match. Regarding team dynamics and individual differences, Carlos was on the same line with Sebastien about the importance of respecting individual differences and needs of the players in the team in order to get the best out of the team. Mattia Pirrello (AC Milan) commented that often “we need to educate the young players to learn about their individual needs and differences.” For building the confidence that Ceb raised up as as key for success in eSports, Rafael Albuquerque (FC Porto) mentioned that in order to build the confidence and motivation of the player, we need to guide and inspire them and give them the freedom to grow as football players. Ceb also talked about managing the pressure, which is obviously very different being an underdog or favorite. He said that the concept of ‘defending the title’ is misleading and just adds on extra pressure, as the team already won the title and it cannot be taken away. Maxime Coulerot (Paris Saint-Germain F.C.) liked the idea and mentioned that “it’s a nice way to take off some pressure from the players.” Paolo concluded that “although it’s important to understand the pressure in the major eSport events, the reality in football academies is very different and the focus is more on the long-term development of the players.”
