25 24 Round Table Topic 1 Making an Impact with data First Half Marc Rochon – Croatian Football Federation Understanding the data is an entirely individual process so you can’t take the same approach with every person. My coach will be different to the coaches here, and that also translates to the players when you’re trying to get buy-in from them as well. Our approach to the National Team is entirely individualized in terms of how we’re going to produce it for the players. There is a player that wants to see more information, a player who wants to be seeing less information, and a player who wants to see more video. We have to take that individual approach of understanding the person, understanding their wants, their needs. You want to make sure that you are enhancing their performance as much as possible, rather than obstructing it with information that is unnecessary for their performance. The more established player who has better-quality understanding of the game might want more information. The player that’s still developing and learning to understand what his role is in the team might need more help but less data. There might be different types of analysis that are provided to the different players, and it has to be individualized to what their needs are, and provided in a way that your target market knows what they want. If I’m presenting to a young player, I present it in a very basic way. If I’m explaining it to an analyst of at least 50 years, I’d probably give as much detail as I can to show depth so they can get a better understanding. It has to be individualized and targeted in what you’re doing. Christian Kejser – Danish Football Association We try to work in a Danish way and everything we want to implement is led by Danish culture. We have a very flat structure, which is allowed by the head coach, which allows every person on the staff to contribute to the overall team. That also then makes the player feel that they could come to any staff member at any time. Because we implement projects in a Danish way, we try to do it with humbleness, joy, and happiness and which also relates to Danish society. We have a very big focus on our data science and performance analysis. We need to use data and performance analysis to not only understand, but also deliver messages on different levels and to different people. We so often hear that we deliver a message, and we have a tactical meeting where the coach presents, we assume that they’ve learned, and when they’ve learned, we assume that they will execute. Often, they will not do as well at what we told them or the coach told them to. I think that’s where data and performance analysis can help us in order to bridge those gaps between teaching, learning, and executing. We spend a lot of time trying to understand those gaps, trying to explain what the metrics mean in a practical way and trying to discuss topics. When the head coach is explaining to us a different specific topic, we would try to explain that with some metrics and try to underline his opinions by using a different language. Over time, the players and the coaching staff start to use those metrics in their language as well.
