Aspire in the World Fellows Book - 2023
/63 I am the Technical Director of FC Porto Academy. I’ve previously been a head coach, systems coach and technical coordinator in professional and youth football. So, I have some experience in different contexts, which helps me understand the bigger picture. At our club, it is important to understand how we look at youth football, how the coaches look at youth football, because the context is very different from professional football. The most important thing in youth football is to develop the players, not how we build our teamtowin. All the clubswant towin. I want to win, but I need to understand that the players, in this moment, are preparing for different things. We need this reflection as coaches. Firstly, we focus on the team and its organization. At different moments of the game, does the team have organization, have a great attitude, have a mentality, know the different moments of the game? Is this what we need to see in the players? The coaches and other departments try to reflect with the players, to understand the different areas, to be better in the future. We have strategies to work on this, coaches need to understand this but sometimes it’s difficult. It’s important for coaches to stay at our club for many years, because of our philosophy. To understand different things at the club, different perspectives, the development during different ages of the players. The coaches need to learn how stay in the academy, and we need to learn from different departments. It’s not only the technical department and the other departments. Together we share information and try to grow our knowledge about the players. We need coaches who’s first ambition is to learn, have the humility to understand that we are always learning and that we need to be better. Humility to share knowledge, understand the different ages in the academy, know the game model and know the methodology. FilipeRibeiro FCPorto: Technical Coordinator TOPIC 3
